Summer Reading
Written June 28th, 2020
This is historically the slowest time of year at the studio. I stay in touch with studio owners across the country and it isn't just our little desert town that has less yoga practitioners practicing publicly in the summer - a decrease in attendance is common throughout the country.
Our habits and interests have seasons and it is interesting to ponder how we might continue our yoga practice throughout the summer even if it doesn't involve taking a class? Are there changes or modifications that you could make that would serve your summer schedule and activities? What about five minutes of movement in the shade after you wake up or ten minutes of restorative postures before bed? If you are playing hard outside you might consider a slower and more gentle practice.
This could also be a good time to turn to your studies. Is there a yogic text you have been wanting to read? One book that I highly recommend is B.K.S. Iyengar's book, Light on Life. He writes about his practice, teaching and family life in the context of a dedicated yoga practitioner. I have read this book multiple times and will read it again.
This Spring I read, Revolution of the Soul by Seane Corne. Seane Corne is one of the modern-day yogis that hit rockstar status in the yoga world sometime in the last fifteen-ish years. She also shares her journey as a dedicated yoga practitioner that includes a rough around the edges start. She gets incredibly vulnerable sharing stories of stealing from past employers, ditching drugs, and healing trauma.
